2008 Albums: Be Your Own Pet - Get Awkward

Be Your Own Pet’s self titled first album was one of my favourite albums of 2006 and still remains one of my favourite debut albums, ever. So ‘Get Awkward’ was always going to find it difficult to better the first album let alone equal its goodness. I think it delivered despite some criticism from various music publications.

One quote I remember from a review of the album said “Be Your Own Pet still haven’t grown up and are still making immature music, for immature people.” Fuck sake. Get a grip, not ALL music has to be serious and not all music has to have in depth meaning. I like serious music and intense lyrics as much as anyone but sometimes you need a break and Be Your Own Pet offer the perfect break.

I’m still a believer that the first album is slightly better but then again I’d give the first album 9.5 out of 10 so this album would’ve had to have been perfect to beat it. Live the new songs sound just as good as the old songs which is testament to how good Be Your Own Pet are live.

‘Becky’, ‘Black Hole’ and ‘Food Fight’ are my favourite songs from the album. Those three songs would easily be up there with my all time favourite songs by Be Your Own Pet alongside classics from the first album like ‘Wildcat!’, ‘Adventure’, ‘Girls on TV’ and so on.

Other songs like ‘The Kelly Affair’, ‘Blummer Time’, ‘Heart Throb’, ‘You’re A Waste’ and ‘Twisted Nerve’ are Be Your Own Pet on top form once again. Be Your Own Pet are a bit like Marmite because for every person I meet who fucking loves them there is someone who thinks they are complete garbage. Each to their own of course, but thankfully I am of the opinion who thinks they and this album is bloody brilliant.

8/10
